Taxes are dependent on your visa status only.
For J-1, you are exempt federal taxes for two years.
For example if you entered USA (the beginning date for tax exemption is not J-1 issue date, it begins from the the entrance date) Oct. 1, 2000, then you are exempt federal tax till Sept. 30, 2002. That is, 24 months.
For social security tax, you are exempt for two years, not 24 months. For example if you entered USA Oct. 1, 2000, then you are exempt social security tax till Dec. 31, 2001.
